The film is inspired by a date in the Mayan calendar – equivalent to December 21, 2012 in modern reckoning – that marks the end of a cycle and is often wrongly interpreted as the date of doomsday. Now, NASA has stepped in to dispel rumours that Earth really is heading for apocalypse. The National Aeronautical and Space Agency has answered a series of key questions on its website to allay fears which have been heightened by the new movie. NASA scientist David Morrison has had thousands of emails from people anxious about the end of the world and even knows of young people who want to commit suicide over it. He said: “There is no threat to Earth in the year 2012, so please don’t worry about it.” He added: “I don’t have anything against the movie.
